A 45-year-old father of five, Clement Idris, was allegedly shot dead by suspected armed robbers while protecting his family during an attack on their home in the Shagari area of Akure, Ondo State.
The grieving family narrated the harrowing events that left five children without a father and a community demanding answers.
According to family members, the attack occurred late Tuesday night when the armed men stormed the Idris residence.
Clement, described by neighbors as a quiet and hardworking man, reportedly confronted the intruders to stop them from harming his wife and children.
“He died shielding us,” a relative who asked not to be named said. “He told us to stay inside and ran out. The next thing we heard were gunshots.”
The robbers reportedly fled with valuables after the shooting. Clement was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The killing adds to growing concerns over insecurity in Akure suburbs. Residents of Shagari and surrounding areas say armed robbery and home invasions have increased in recent months, with many calling for more police patrols.
“We are living in fear,” said a neighbour. “If a man cannot protect his family in his own house, where else is safe?”
Ondo State Police Command is yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
A source at the command confirmed that an investigation has begun and that efforts are underway to track the suspects.
Clement leaves behind a wife and five children, the eldest aged 17. Family members say they are struggling to cope with both the loss and funeral expenses.
“We just want justice,” his wife said through tears. “He gave his life for us. The government should help us and ensure those responsible are caught.”
Community leaders in Shagari have called on the state government and security agencies to strengthen surveillance in residential areas to prevent a repeat of the tragedy.
