A public affairs analyst, Gasbin Okoro has warned Ubeji community in Delta State over the imposition of 40 strokes of cane as punishment for indecent dressing in the locality.

Gasbin Okoro while speaking via telephone with Realtime.ng correspondent, said the proposal amounts to leaping into the world of unrestrained criminality as no body or individual is invested with such powers but the court of law.
He added that it will amount to assault of unfathomable legal consequences which will earn the culprits considerable prison terms.
He said; “it’s only the court of law that has powers to determine indecent or provocative dressing.
“Even the police and religious bodies are not invested with such powers.
“Let’s learn or ask questions from lawyers before we dive into actions that will restrict our freedom”.
He warned Ubeji community not to carry out the “threat”.

The Ubeji Youth and Employment Development in Delta State’s Warri South Local Government Area had announced that a punishment of 40 strokes or fine of N10,000 on any girl spotted dressing indecently in the community.

Stanley Bomele, the body’s secretary, told reporters that the youths had begun an activity dubbed, “War Against Indecent Dressing,” among young ladies in the area.

Bomele, who stated that the exercise was essential owing to the provocative manner women dressed in the community, announced a ban on the wearing of miniskirts, bum shorts, or tight (bikers shorts).

He warned that such attire would no longer be tolerated because indecent clothing was the leading source of assaults and sexual harassment in the society.

He believed that most of the females had gone berserk in the name of fashion, with some of them walking around virtually naked, and that the trend was annoying and did not reflect anything good on the community.

He stated that the drill will continue until the young females in the village learned how to dress correctly.
