The Government of the United Mexican States has formally approved the appointment of Bemigho Reno Omokri as Ambassador Extraordinaire and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to Mexico.

Omokri announced the development on Tuesday in a post on X.

According to him, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the United Mexican States in Abuja, Mr. José Manuel Briseño Flores, delivered the agrément to the Director of Protocol of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Babagana Wakil, in Abuja.

“To God Be The Glory, The Chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of the United Mexican States in Abuja, @EmbaMexNig, Mr José Manuel Briseño Flores, Today In Abuja Delivered The Agrément From The Government of the United Mexican States Accepting Me, Bemigho Reno Omokri, to Serve as Ambassador Extraordinaire and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Mexican States, With Concurrent Accreditation To The Republic of Guatemala, The Republic of Honduras, and The Republic of Nicaragua,” he wrote.

With the approval, Omokri will also serve as Nigeria’s envoy to three Central American nations – Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua – under concurrent accreditation.

Omokri was nominated by President Bola Tinubu in November 2025 alongside other nominees, including former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode and former INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu. He was confirmed by the Senate in December 2025.

In March 2026, President Tinubu approved the posting of 65 ambassadors-designate, with Omokri deployed to Mexico City.

His resumption, however, was delayed pending the issuance of agrément by the Mexican government.

In August, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had listed Mexico and Japan among countries yet to communicate formal acceptance for Nigeria’s ambassadorial nominees.

The approval on Tuesday now clears the way for Omokri, a former Special Assistant to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan and author, to assume duty.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is expected to announce a date for his official deployment.
