Two Nigerian nationals have duped a Chennai-based woman of N3.2m. The matter came to light after the victim lodged a complaint with the police.
As per the report, the city’s cybercrime wing have arrested two New Delhi-based Nigerians, Paulinus Chikelu, 31 and Cletus Ikechukwu, 23 for allegedly defrauding an unamed Channai woman who they met on ‘Matrimonial Site.
One of the inline fraudsters proposed to the lady after seeing her profile on the matrimonial portal. The accused posed as a doctor from the Netherlands.
The police team have also seized mobile phones, laptops, and N3.3m in cash from the possession of the duo.
While commenting on the incident, a police officer said that the victim created her profile on a matrimonial site. A man using a Netherland-based number told her that he is looking for a bride from Chennai. The suspect told her that he is sending gifts for her.
Later on, she received a call from an unknown number saying a gift parcel addressed to her had a Euro currency bundle in it. To give a clearance, the man demanded Rs 77,000 from her.
The victim also paid N 202,000 in the name of ‘marriage registration, and when the caller demanded N686,000 the complainant refused to pay. She then received another call, the caller identified himself as ‘groom’s brother’ and requested her to receive the parcel otherwise his brother would end his life.
Inquiries further revealed that the woman transferred N686,000 to the accounts provided by the caller, reports The Times of India.
Unsuspecting of the accused’s intentions, the woman paid the amount, but when the suspect demanded another N975,000 to pay for the card, she filed a police complaint.
