Benin City – Panic gripped the University of Benin community on Saturday morning after gunmen shot dead a part-time student at the institution’s main gate.

The attack occurred without warning, forcing students and staff to scamper for safety. Eyewitness videos circulating online show the victim’s body lying at the gate as people fled the scene. The gunmen reportedly left the body behind and escaped before security operatives arrived.

The incident has heightened tension on campus, with many students suspecting a link to a violent clash that occurred inside UNIBEN a day earlier. A video of that clash has also been circulating on social media, though authorities have not confirmed any connection.

As of press time, the university management and the Edo State Police Command had not released an official statement on the killing or the identity of the victim.

The attack adds to a string of violent incidents at UNIBEN in recent years, many linked to suspected cult activity.
