There was pandemonium in Sapele on Wednesday morning as residents of the area mostly women and youths protested the additional 14 days extension of the lock down by the Delta State government.
The peaceful protest suddenly snowballed into a massive one when men of the Sapele Divisional Police and Vigilantes arrived the scene of the protest.
An eyewitness said that some persons were shot before journalists arrived the scene of the protest. As at the time of filing this report, newsmen were yet to ascertain who was responsible for the shooting.
Meanwhile, a gun was found at the scene of the incident suspected to belong to either the Sapele Police or the Vigilantee. It was gathered that victims of the gun shot were immediately rushed to the Obule Medical Center, where they are currently receiving treatment.
Some residents of Sapele in an interview expressed dissatisfaction at the manner in which the Sapele Police and Vigilantee conducted themselves during the protest.
They alleged that since the lock down began, security operatives in the local government area have conducted themselves unprofessionally.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Delta State Command, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, confirmed the incident to RealTime24, but said the source of the gun shots was to be established.
She disclosed that normalcy has returned to Sapele and that the Police is on top of the situation.
