A U.S. Army colonel has cautioned Nigerians against assuming that relocating abroad automatically guarantees success, urging prospective migrants to carefully consider their options before leaving.
Colonel Gabriel Isioye, who is also a dental surgeon, gave the warning while speaking on the Diaspora Connect programme.
Isioye said many Nigerians who relocate, including trained professionals, struggle to continue in their chosen careers after moving abroad due to licensing, cultural and economic challenges.
He urged those considering the popular “Japa” trend – a Nigerian term for emigrating – to “look before you leap” and to weigh the realities of life abroad against opportunities at home.
Isioye did not call for an end to migration, but said proper planning, research and realistic expectations were essential for those who decide to leave.
