Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Monday, inaugurated a modern market in Oporoza, the traditional headquarters of Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South West Local Government Area, as part of efforts to boost trade and development in riverine communities.
Represented by the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, Oborevwori said the facility was designed to strengthen grassroots commerce, support small businesses and improve livelihoods in the rural areas.
The market comprises 24 lock-up shops, 24 open stalls, solar-powered water supply, modern restrooms and landscaping.
“This market is a clear demonstration of our commitment to grassroots development. We are determined to ensure that our riverine communities are not left behind in the development agenda of the state,” Guwor said on behalf of the governor.
Oborevwori added that the government would consider requests for expansion of the facility once it was put to effective use, and urged community leaders and traders to ensure that the facility is well maintained.
The project aligns with the administration’s “MORE Agenda”, which focuses on infrastructure, job creation and inclusive growth, the governor’s office said.
Delta State Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Samuel Oligida, said the market would stimulate local enterprises and economic activity, while Commissioner for Riverine Infrastructure, Ebikeme Clark, described it as evidence of equitable development across the state.
Local government and community leaders also welcomed the project. The Chairman of Oporoza Community, Emmanuel Ebi, called it a “landmark development” for the area.
The inauguration was attended by lawmakers, state officials, traditional rulers and residents. The facility was formally handed over to the community leadership for allocation of the shops to traders.
