Barcelona have completed the signing of winger Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund in a deal worth a reported €40 million, approximately $43.2 million or ₦63 billion, the club announced Wednesday.
The 24-year-old has signed a contract through 2031 at Camp Nou and becomes the first Nigerian to play for Barcelona’s senior team.
Adeyemi joins after informing Dortmund of his desire to leave following a breakdown in contract extension negotiations this summer.
The Germany-born forward, who represents Nigeria at international level, spent three seasons in the Bundesliga, scoring 28 goals in 89 appearances for Dortmund.
“Barca is a dream for every footballer,” Adeyemi said in a club statement. “I’m proud to represent Nigeria and to make history here. I’m ready to work.”
No Nigerian has previously played a competitive match for Barcelona’s first team.
Nigeria Football Federation President Ibrahim Gusau called it “a proud moment.”
“This is historic. Karim has opened the door for many more Nigerian talents at the biggest clubs in the world,” Gusau said.
Barcelona have targeted more pace in wide areas after finishing last season with inconsistencies on the flanks.
Adeyemi is known for 1-on-1 dribbling and direct running. He is expected to compete with Lamine Yamal and Raphinha for minutes on both wings.
Club president Joan Laporta said: “Karim brings youth, power and goals. He fits our style and our project.”
The €40 million fee could rise with add-ons, according to a person with knowledge of the deal. Dortmund negotiated a 10% sell-on clause.
Adeyemi will wear No. 19 and will be presented to fans at Camp Nou on Friday. He could make his debut against Real Sociedad on September, 13.
