Police in Abuja have rescued a 36-year-old woman who was allegedly chained and locked in a room by her brother for more than one year, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command said.

Officers forced entry into the residence after the suspect resisted, the command said in a statement. The woman, identified as Grace Aniekuoku, was found in chains, severely emaciated and living in squalid conditions. She is receiving medical treatment at a hospital.

Preliminary investigations suggest the confinement was intended to prevent the victim from making inquiries about the whereabouts of her son, the police said. Community sources allege a dispute over a family business may also have been a factor, though both claims remain unverified and are under investigation.

Unlawful confinement, deprivation of liberty and assault are criminal offences, the command added.

The suspect remains in custody as efforts continue to locate the victim’s missing son and conclude investigations.
