Police in Gujarat’s Morbi, India, have arrested a labourer and his landlord following allegations of sexual exploitation involving the man’s wife and minor daughter.

According to the complaint, the family moved to Morbi about six months ago for work and rented a house for N29,000 (twenty nine thousand naira) per month. As their financial situation worsened, they fell behind on rent payments.

Police said the landlord allegedly exploited the family’s situation and demanded sexual favors from the wife in exchange for waiving the unpaid rent. The husband is accused of agreeing to the arrangement, after which the landlord allegedly sexually assaulted the woman multiple times.

The case escalated when the landlord allegedly extended his demands to the couple’s minor daughter. Officials said the father again gave consent, enabling continued abuse of the child.

The minor was reportedly taken to several locations, including a property in Tankara, where she was subjected to further abuse involving the landlord and another individual.

The exploitation came to light after the woman’s maternal grandfather learned of the situation. He filed a complaint with local authorities.

Morbi Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The labourer and the landlord have been arrested. The worker has been remanded to judicial custody, while the landlord is in one-day police custody.

Officials said a third suspect remains at large, and teams have been formed to locate him, according to India Today.
