The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the death of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi in what it described as an “extra-judicial killing” in Effurun on April 26, 2026.

The incident came to light after a viral video allegedly showed a police officer shooting a young man, sparking public outrage.

In a press release, the Command said operatives from Area Command Effurun had apprehended Ogidi while he was allegedly attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.

According to the statement, ASP Nuhu Usman, who led the team, “in clear violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force, discharged his firearm, leading to the death of the suspect.”

The Command said ASP Usman has been arrested, queried, and transferred to Force Headquarters in Abuja to face the Force Disciplinary Committee for “immediate disciplinary sanction and prosecution.”

Commissioner of Police Yemi Oyeniyi condemned the incident and assured the public that justice would be served. He stressed that the Command has “zero tolerance for lawlessness, recklessness and extra-judicial conduct.”

Oyeniyi extended condolences to Ogidi’s family and urged residents to remain calm as due process is followed.
