I hope those who waved Russian flags in Nigeria during Omoyele Sowore’s Days of Rage protest can see that Russia could not save Bashir Assad of Syria, who was their strongest ally in the Middle East. The attached photo was taken in Syria a few months ago. You can see that they were also flying Russian flags in Damascus.

When push came to shove, the Russian government took the most prudent action for their own personal safety. They focused on their war with Ukraine and prioritised it over propping up the Assad regime.

Moral of the story: Self-interest will always prevail over the interests of your allies.

Nigerians should also look at the ongoing chaos in Burkina Faso, where their military dictator has just fired yet another government amidst soaring inflation and insecurity. Ditto for neighbouring Niger, where things are so tough that organised crime gangs are now controlling swathes of the country.

Meanwhile, Ghana held an election yesterday, and in less than twenty-four hours, they knew their next president, which brought economic and political stability. Ivory Coast is experiencing economic prosperity. Sierra Leone and Liberia are finally stable. And the other democracies of West Africa are doing much better than those that came under military rule.

A wise man learns from the mistakes of others. A fool learns from his own mistakes.

Let us in Nigeria not be a foolish nation. Rather, we should celebrate our recent 3.46% GDP growth and phenomenal 4.3% unemployment rate.

Nigeria should learn from our recent experience and the happenings in our neighbours and accept that regardless of our feelings about the outcome of the #NigerianElections2023, democracy is still very much the best form of government for a multiethnic and religiously heterogeneous nation like Nigeria. At the same time, free market policies are most suited for our economy.
