• A man who jumped into lions’ enclosure in a Ghana zoo has died, after being attacked by the animal.

The Forestry Commission confirmed the man died from injuries sustained in the incident and his body had been moved to the morgue.

The motive of the intruder had not yet been determined.

The man’s lifeless body was discovered by guards at the zoo, around midday.

John Allotey, Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission, said officials of the Accra Zoo on a routine patrol on Sunday noticed a middle aged man had jumped the security fences and entered the lions enclosure of the Zoo.

“He had been attacked and injured by one of the lions within the inner fencing of the enclosure”, Mr Allotey said.

Accra Zoo authorities successfully coaxed the lions into a secure hold, before inviting the Achimota Police to convey the body and commence investigations.

“We wish to confirm that the lion, the lioness and the two cubs remain secured in their enclosure at the Accra Zoo,” the authorities said.

A police spokesman also said the Forestry Commission wished to assure the general public that no lion had escaped from the Accra Zoo.

Mr Allotey, along with Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Benitor Owusu Bio, visited the Zoo on Sunday afternoon to ensure all facilities remained secure.
