Women journalists in Delta State have kicked against the stripping naked of a lady for alleged pilfering at a supermarket in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area.

The reaction of the women journalists in the state followed a recent viral video where a woman was seen stripped naked for allegedly stealing from a supermarket.

Reacting under the auspices of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists NAWOJ, Delta State Chapter, the women journalists described the act as unfortunate, barbaric and cruel in all aspects of human dignity.

A statement by the Chairperson of the Association, Comrade Pat Gbemudu and the Secretary, Comrade Eunice Emeyezia, while condemning the act of stealing in any form, frowned at the jungle justice meted on the woman, insisting rather that the suspect should have been handed over to the police.

The association opined that the events in recent times occasioned by the COVID-19 lockdown may have pushed the lady to commit the alleged crime especially if the household of such a woman was faced with hardship and hunger.

The Delta State Police Commissioner the Association called should as a matter of urgency invite the management of Wilmark Supermarket and all those involved in the act for questioning noting that measure would serve as deterrent to others who may want to get involve themselves in jungle justice.
