A 34-year-old woman was shot dead by her husband during their wedding reception in Campinas, São Paulo state, on Saturday, May 9, 2026.

Police said Nájylla Duenas Nascimento died after being shot by her husband, Daniel Barbosa Marinho, 55, following an argument at the reception. Marinho is a member of the Municipal Guard and had served since 1998.

According to the Civil Police, the couple had a heated dispute that turned physical. Authorities allege Marinho used his service weapon to shoot Nascimento, fled the scene, and later returned to fire again. The initial shots were not fatal, police said.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but Nascimento was pronounced dead at the reception venue. She was a mother of three from a previous relationship. Witnesses told local media that family members removed the children from the residence before the shooting.

Marinho reportedly contacted the Municipal Guard after the incident and was detained on suspicion of femicide. He was taken to the Second Women’s Defense Department and placed in pretrial detention.

Investigators seized casings, projectiles, ammunition, and the weapon believed to have been used in the shooting, according to Brazilian outlet UOL.

The Municipal Guard of Campinas said it “deeply regrets the incident” and stated it is cooperating with the Civil Police investigation.

“The corporation is fully cooperating with the Civil Police investigations and remains available to the authorities to provide all necessary clarifications,” a spokesperson told UOL.

The case remains under investigation by Brazilian authorities.
