The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has approved the dismissal and prosecution of ASP Nuhu Usman and other officers involved in the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State, on April 26, 2026.
In a statement on Wednesday, Force Public Relations Officer Anthony Okon Placid said all officers linked to the incident were withdrawn from the Delta State Command and transferred to Force Headquarters, Abuja, for expedited disciplinary action on the IGP’s directive.
The Force Disciplinary Committee concluded its review and found “serious breaches of operational procedures,” particularly on the use of firearms.
“Findings established unequivocally that the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other extant regulations governing the use of firearms,” the statement said. His actions were described as “unlawful, unprofessional, and a clear betrayal of the oath to protect life and uphold the law.”
The committee recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman and other culpable officers. The IGP approved the recommendations and forwarded them to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process.
Once administrative steps are completed, the affected officers will be handed over to judicial authorities for prosecution over the extrajudicial shooting.
IGP Disu reaffirmed the Force’s “zero-tolerance stance on extra-judicial actions and abuse of power,” stating: “No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law. Any officer who violates this fundamental principle will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences.”
The Force extended condolences to Ogidi’s family and pledged that justice would “not only be served but seen to be served” to reinforce public confidence.
The police appealed for calm and urged residents to remain law-abiding as disciplinary and legal processes continue.
The killing sparked outrage after a viral video showed a handcuffed Ogidi being shot. The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) condemned it as a “clear case of extrajudicial execution,” with Executive Director Okechukwu Nwanguma noting Ogidi was “defenceless” and “pleading for his life.”
The Take It Back Movement, Delta State Chapter, also condemned the killing by ASP Usman, known as “Ogbegbe,” in Uvwie. Coordinator Comrade Ochuko Etu demanded a “thorough, transparent, and independent investigation.”
