The Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) has expressed worries over the rapidly increasing rate of kidnapping, armed robbery and other crimes in the state, particularly in Delta Central and Delta North.
In a press release by chairman of the forum, Mr. Emmanuel Enebeli and the secretary, Mr. Shedrack Onitsha, the group called on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to intensify their efforts in curbing the menaces that are threatening the peace and security of communities in the state.
According to the publishers, there has been a disturbing surge in kidnapping activities on major highways, including the Sapele-Effurrun road and the East-west Road between Agbarho and Ughelli, and traveling these roads are “daring” as hardly a day passes without cases of kidnap and armed robbery.
DOPF also highlighted the siege on Egbo-Urhe in Ughelli South local government area by kidnappers, and the fear that has gripped families and businesses in the region.
The forum urged the Inspector General of Police and the Delta State Commissioner of Police to deploy additional resources and personnel to the affected areas to ensure protection of lives and property.
DOPF also appealed to the state government to support security agencies with logistics to enhance intelligence gathering and community policing. It called for meaningful dialogue with herder communities to address underlying issues contributing to the attacks.
The Delta Online Publishers emphasized the need for collective action to put an end to these acts of violence and ensure the safety and security of citizens and foster a prosperous Delta State.
