Controversy and confusion have taken over the shocking death of the Registrar of the National Examination Council (NECO), in Minna, Prof. Godswill Obioma, who died, Monday.

While wife of the deceased Professor of mathematics claimed her husband was strangled by unknown assailants, the examinations body, Tuesday, however, claimed the Registrar died after a brief illness.

A circular released and signed by the Director, Human Resource Management, NECO in Minna, Mustapha K. Abdul, which copied the T.A to the Registrar/CE, P.A to the Registrar/CE, Zonal Coordinators, State Officers, Liaison Officers, and All Staff, in that order, claimed Prof. Obioma died on Monday ‘after a brief illness.’

“I am directed to inform all staff of the Council of the death of Prof. Godswill Obioma, Registrar/Chief Executive of the National Examination Council (NECO), who according to family sources, died yesterday 31st May 2021 after a brief illness.

“While Staff are enjoined to remain calm, the Council prays for the peaceful repose of his soul,” the circular by Mustapha K. Abdul, dated Tuesday, June 1, 2021 read.

The late Obioma, a Professor of Mathematics, who hails from Nkpa in Bende local government area of Abia State, was said to have been having a running battle with senior officials of the Federal Ministry of Education who were bent on ousting him from office.

Reports from Minna said that the Professor’s assailants stormed his residence and strangled him to death and left without taking anything from his house.

His wife, Elizabeth Obioma, disclosed Tuesday morning that ‘the assassins came in and killed him and left without taking anything.’

Elizabeth, who was said to be weeping profusely, added that her husband had just returned to Minna from a trip to Abuja when the armed men, lurking in his compound, descended on him and strangled him.

67 year-old Obioma was appointed NECO Registrar in late May, 2020.
