  • Some drinks ‘increase your risk’
  • New research is suggesting that drinking wine could reduce the risk of infection.

A new study has found that those who drink five or more glasses of red wine are at a lower risk of catching Covid-19.

Researched published by Frontiers in Nutrition suggest that drinking wine could lower your chance of catching the virus by up to 17 per cent.

Scientists believe that it could be due to the high polyphenol content in the alcohol, and even white wine and Champagne could lower the risk of infection.

The study looked at 473,957 medical records via the UK Biobank and did find that some alcoholic drinks actually increase the risk.

Beverages like beer and cider were found to increase the risk by up to 28 per cent compared to non-drinkers.

The study records in its conclusion: “The COVID-19 risk appears to vary across different alcoholic beverage sub types, frequency, and amount.

“Red wine, white wine, and champagne have chances to reduce the risk of COVID-19. Consumption of beer and cider and spirits and heavy drinking are not recommended during the epidemics.

“Public health guidance should focus on reducing the risk of COVID-19 by advocating healthy lifestyle habits and preferential policies among consumers of beer and cider and spirits.”

It has recently been reported that two lesser known Omicron symptoms, nicknamed ‘stealth variant’ has infected hundreds of people.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said 426 cases of the Omicron BA.2, a variant under investigation, have been found so far.

It has been nicknamed a “stealth variant” as it is more difficult to detect than Omicron BA.1 but there’s not enough evidence to show whether it causes more severe illness.
