A 21-year-old mother of one, Elizabeth Oyibode, has tragically died after reportedly receiving medical treatment from a suspected quack at a local patent medicine shop in Ekpan area of Delta State.

A source told said that the incident was reported to the police on Thursday.

The source said that Elizabeth began the treatment after her partner, Jonathan Okuma who is also the father of her child visited the shop seeking relief from what was described as ‘body discomfort’.

An auxiliary nurse who runs the shop, identified as Stella Odiase Ibhade, allegedly diagnosed him as being infected with “staphylococcus”, without conducting any medical tests.

“The nurse advised that both Jonathan and Elizabeth undergo simultaneous treatment due to their sexual relationship. Days into the treatment, the nurse claimed Elizabeth also had typhoid and malaria.

Despite Jonathan’s objection and request to complete the initial treatment for infection, the nurse allegedly proceeded without consent of the patient or her partner.

“Jonathan later revealed that he was asked to send money for laboratory analysis but the nurse reportedly began administering intravenous treatment without confirmation of any test results. Upon returning from work, Jonathan found his girlfriend unconscious, with IV lines already attached at the ‘chemist’ shop.

“Elizabeth suffered severe medical complications that led to full-body paralysis and loss of speech. She was rushed to Warri Central Hospital, where she passed away three days later,” the source stated.

It was gathered that the Delta State Police Command had since shut down the patent medicine shop. The proprietor, suspected to be a fake nurse, Stella Odiase Ibhade, is currently in police custody at the Ekpan Police Station.

The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Edafe Bright, confirmed the incident on Tuesday, noting that an investigation is ongoing.

“Yes it’s true, investigation is on going,” the officer said.
