Farawa community in Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State was thrown into confusion following the traffic death of a youngman, Salisu Idris Ibrahim, who was allegedly killed by his wife, Saudat Jibrin Adam, nine days after their wedding.

The incident, which occurred late Monday night, has sent shockwaves through out the community, located on the outskirts of Kano.

According to witnesses, Saudat lured her husband into a fatal trap by asking him to close his eyes for a ‘surprise’ before slitting his throat with a sharp knife.

One of the witnesses, Dini Mada,said Salisu had mentioned his wife as the attacker before he was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Dini said, “I asked him who did this to you and he said, ‘Dini, it’s my wife who stabbed my neck with a knife in the parlour. She asked me to close my eyes so that she would surprise me, but I didn’t know that she had hidden her knife somewhere. She cut me in the neck.’

“We met that very night the incident happened and said good night to each other before he entered his house, and I left for mine. Like 10 minutes later, his mum, whose house is attached to her son’s, called me and said some people attacked Salisu. But on reaching there, we found that his throat was slit,” said the witness.

The suspected killer-bride reportedly locked herself in a bedroom but was discovered by police during a search.

“She was on the phone when police arrived, and they arrested her immediately. We did not even know that she was still in the house,” the witness added.

Reports say angry youth in the area had mobilised but the quick intervention by the police saved the situation.

According to Dini, who is a close friend of the deceased, the couple had unresolved tensions that only known to their few close allies.

“Despite their pre-wedding affection, she refused to consummate the marriage and often declined to cook for him. On the night of the murder, Salisu purchased Gurasa and meat for dinner after she again failed to prepare a meal,” he added.

His brother, Tanimu Idris, said the deceased had since been buried.

Police spokesperson in the state, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa,confirmed the arrest of the 18-year-Saudat in connection with a culpable homicide.

Kiyawa said upon receiving the report of the incident,the command deployed a team of detectives to the scene, adding that, “The suspect was apprehended and is currently at the homicide section of the command’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and will be charged to court for the offence of culpable homicide.”

This is not the first-time tragic incident like this is happening in the state.

In 2021, one Rahma Hussein was pardoned seven years after she was convicted of stabbing her husband to death few days after marriage.

Rahma was said to be forcefully married when she was 16.
