“A Chilean engineer entered a subway station in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden.
There, he noticed that among many normal and common turnstiles, there was one that gave free passage.
He then asked the ticket seller why the turnstile was permanently free and without any security officers nearby.
The woman then explained that this step was intended for people who, for whatever reason, did not have the money to pay for their ticket.
Incredulous, accustomed to the Chilean way, he couldn’t help but ask the question that was obvious to him:
– ‘What if the person had money, but just didn’t want to pay?’
The saleswoman narrowed her blue eyes and with a smile of overwhelming purity replied:
– ‘But why would I do that?’
Unable to find an answer, the engineer paid his ticket and walked through the turnstile, followed by a crowd who had also paid their ticket.
The free passage was empty.
Honesty is one of the most liberating values a people can have.
A society that has managed to transform this value into something natural is undoubtedly in a higher state of development.
