The black out in Ghana was caused by shutdown of gas supply from Nigeria due to the country’s inability to settle the gas bills amounting to $300 million, and not for maintenance purposes on the gas system as claimed in many quarters, Realtime has gathered.
The supply cut consequently plunged many parts of the West African country into darkness as a result of load shedding.
In a subtle way to manage the information, Ghana announced a ‘three-week power interruption due to a reduction in gas supply from Nigeria’.
It was also gathered that efforts by Nigeria to get the bills settled are yet to be heeded by Ghana.
Niger, Benin and Togo are also in line for cut-off due to debt accruing from gas and electricity supply.
Nigerian government has confirmed the report.
