- Beware before you japa
His words: “Almost everything you see in the West is film trick.
“The lovely houses you see are bought on mortgage. You must work like a donkey to make the monthly payments. You miss three payments, and the bank repossesses your home. Ditto for that luxury car. It will surprise you to note that Nigerians travel outside Nigeria far more than Americans travel outside America.
“Most Americans can’t simply afford it. They have got house payments, car loans, and even the furniture in their homes are bought on credit. And God forbid that the value of your home drops, that is your own business. That is not the bank’s business or responsibility. You are OYO! And you are still liable to the bank for the price at which you bought it. And believe me, that can demoralise you faster than NEPA taking power, or being stuck in Lagos go-slow. Life is not as easy as you think it is in the West.
“The happiness you have in Africa is scarce in the West. Please don’t take it for granted! The West just knows how to photoshop life so well that you think it is heaven.
“But japa there, and you will soon find yourselves working to maintain a lifestyle that can vanish in the twinkling of an eye if you don’t run the rat race”.
