The rainstorm with intermittent lightning experienced last night in parts of Delta State have left a woman severely injured after she was struck by lightning.

According to the woman, simply identified as Mrs Chineye, she was caught up by the thunderstorm on her way home in company with her sister. She said they took shelter at security house of Esezi Secondary School, Ughoton and after waiting endlessly for the rain to abate, the duo decided to brave the downpour.

While crossing the school playground, she said she felt a sharp pain like that of electric shock and didn’t know what happened thenceforth as she regained consciousness in a hospital bed.

It was gathered that passersby had to rush her when she lost consciousness to a nearby hospital where doctors battled and resuscitated her.

She sustained injuries on her chest, shoulder and laps.

Mrs Chineye however pointed accusing finger at her cellphone which was turned on during the thunderstorm as her sister who was by her, as well as boys playing on the pitch were not affected by the lightning.

A member of the community who was among those that rushed her to hospital, advised phone users to always turn off their phones during thunderstorm, especially when they are in open spaces to avoid lightning strike.
