Students of Delta State University, Abraka, Monday February 2; embarked on protest against what they termed ‘astronomical increase of the school fees’.

Several students of the state premier university stormed the campus at Abraka in the early hours of the day and shut down the main entrance gates as well as all other access roads, thus preventing vehicular movements in and out of the school.

The protesters carried various placards calling on the school authorities to review the decision in view the hard times and frequent increase in the school’s tuition.

One of the placards read; “We don’t want to be involved in ritual activities and sex trade in search for money for school fees”.

The angry students lamented that the Delta State University authorities were pushing students into prostitution and ritual activities by their actions and appealed to the State Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, to wade into the matter without further delay. They asked for downward review of the school fees in the state’s tertiary institutions.

They further stated that except the decision on the tuition increment is reviewed, many students will drop out of school.

The protesters were heard shouting, singing and calling on the state governor as well as the Vice-Chancelllor to rescind the decision.

Efforts to elicit comments from the school authority and the state Ministry of Education over the matter were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
