…rampaging youths destroy 13 cars

Two persons were reportedly shot Sunday at Oghara, while Hon. Eriatake Ibori-Suenu, a member representing Ethiope West Local Government Area in the Delta State House of Assembly, and daughter of a former governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori, narrowly escaped lynching after two factions clash over elections in the community.

The battle for supremacy left no fewer than 13 cars destroyed by rampaging youths belonging to various factions. It was also gathered that the crisis claimed a life some weeks back, which created tension in the community after many factions declared interest in the community leadership election.

The source said trouble started when a faction got wind that another group was planning to hold election illegally in the community. One of the groups therefore drew attention of Hon. Ibori-Suenu to the development and requested her to invite the rival factions for a parley at Ex-Gov. Ibori’s country home.

The source further stated that at the meeting, a disagreement snowballed to a fight which led the Ex-Gov’s daughter to flee for her life.

The youths were said to have gone on a rampage, during which two persons were shot and several cars destroyed; while many youths sustained various degrees of injury.

“As I speak to you we are at the police station with Hon Ibori-Suenu and tension is currently high, some of the youths are on the run,” the source said.

However, it was gathered that the clash was a result of imposition of the current chairman, whose tenure has elapsed.

A source who spoke on condition of anonymity said that the, “Position of chairman was for a tenure of three years, the present chairman’s tenure has elapsed and they are trying to give him another term, we will not accept that, we will fight for our right”.

When asked who is behind the imposition, he said; “Ask them, those that think Oghara belongs to them, but they will be shocked this time around”.
