There is tension at the Ughelli office of the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) following reported attempts to set alight, the office of DSIEC by suspected hoodlums on the eve of the local government election.
It was gathered that some angry mobs allegedly stormed DSIEC office at Ughelli, Ughelli North Government Area of Delta State in an attempt to set the building on fire, but the timely intervention of the police saved the day.
The incident occurred about 8:20 pm last night and has caused chaos in the area, as sporadic gunshots were heard till early morning of today (Saturday).
A source said: “The hoodlums wanted to raze down the DSIEC office, but for the timely intervention of security personnel on guard, peace was restored.
“The salvo lasted till about 01:45 am in the early hours of the morning.
According to a security source, “actually there were some persons lurking around the DESIEC office last night and today but the security agents are on ground to quell any attempt.
The source stated that tension were high in the area, because at 9.40am; election materials were yet to arrive at Ughelli DESIEC office.
However, it was gathered that material were allegedly distributed at the Ughelli Township stadium on time, but the reason for the delay could not be explained.
Also, at 9:30am, report across the state showed that voting had not commenced in most local government areas.
