Residents of Ughoton community in Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State have taken to the streets in peaceful protest over continuous power blackout and ‘crazy bills’ to consumers despite lack of electric power supply running to several months.
The protesters allege that on a few occasions when “there was light, it does not last for an hour or two! Even so, the voltage is usually very low that it is hardly used for anything meaningful; and to add insult to injury, they have the temerity to cut the supply”, said a resident who simply identified himself as Onome.
Another resident, Johnson Eboigbe said that they “have been making light payment to the light committee, and I wonder where the money was paid to over the years”.
Eboigbe also frown at the ploy by the electric supply firm where “they only make light available at the end of the month in order to distribute their bills and get payment; only to throw us into darkness in the remaining part of the month”.
Realtime.ng gathered that the community wants a fixed schedule for supply of electricity to the residents – like a specified period in which the area will be powered.
