Lecturers in the Delta state College of Education Agbor and Delta State Polytechnic Ozoro which have been upgraded to university by the state government should be cautious in celebrating the upgrade as it portends transfer for those lecturers with only first degree.
In a briefing by the Delta State Commissioner for Higher Education, Professor Patrick Muoboghare; the commissioner said that not all the lecturers will be absorbed in the two new universities.
He outlined conditions which they must fulfill before being absorbed in the universities. The commissioner noted that in the country’s university system, for one to qualify to lecture, he must must possess either a masters or doctorate degree in addition to his first degree.
Muoboghare specifically stated that a first degree holder is not qualified to teach in any of the upgraded institutions. He said those not qualified will be moved to other institutions – either to other colleges of education or polytechnics in the state.
He revealed that Delta State College of Education Agbor, has 192 lecturers with masters degree (M.Sc), while 82 have doctorate degrees (PhD).
He noted that with this, many of the lecturers will be retained while others with lower degrees will he moved to other colleges of education in the state.
He also said that 101 lecturers of Delta State Polytechnic Ozoro have masters degrees, and 20 with doctorate degrees.
