There are a few key signs your illness is coronavirus.

As Nigeria and other countries enter the second wave of covid-19, a number of symptoms may be a pointer that the individual has been infected with the dreaded coronavirus.

The risks become higher as many Nigerians do not believe that covid-19 is in the country; therefore, they shun the preventive protocols of the virus.

You may have contracted Covid-19 if you have these symptoms.

Fever

A “persistent fever” is one of the main COVID-19 symptoms to look out for.

Chills

While chills are not specific to COVID-19, they are one of the main symptoms. The episodes of shivering are usually a precursor of a fever or result of one.

Loss of Smell/Taste

One of the most unusual symptoms that many COVID-19 patients experience is loss of senses of smell and taste.

Shortness of Breath

Due to the fact that COVID-19 attacks the respiratory system, many people have difficulty breathing. Shortness of breath, also called dyspnea, is one of the viruses hallmark symptoms.

Fatigue

While feeling rundown is common when you are feeling sick, if you suddenly experience severe exhaustion that isn’t associated with a lack of sleep or exerting a lot of energy, you should consider COVID-19. And, unfortunately, COVID related fatigue tends to linger.

What you should do if you experience these symptoms

If you are experiencing any or all of these symptoms, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have COVID-19. However, due to the infectious nature of the virus and in light of the recent surge in cases, it’s likely that you do— so you should either quarantine from others or get tested to rule it out.

To protect yourself from getting infected, do the following:

  • Wear a face mask.
  • Practice social distancing.
  • Avoid large crowds.
  • Don’t go indoors with people you’re not sheltering with (especially in bars).
  • Practice good hand hygiene and to protect your life and the lives of others.
  • Observe all the preventive protocols.
