The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, on Thursday lifted the ban on media coverage of all Police activities in the state.
The union had placed the ban on the Delta State Police Command following the unwarranted attack and brutalization of Vanguard Correspondent, Akpokona Omafuaire.
The ban was lifted during the NUJ maiden congress held Thursday, November 12, at Asaba, the state capital.
The union noted that an apology, as well as other measures taken by the command, including: settlement of the medical bills incurred by Comrade Omafuaire, repair of his damaged vehicle and disciplinary measures taken against the police officers in Ovwian-Aladja Police Station involved in the brutalization was enough to lift the ban.
Meanwhile, at the congress, a by-election was held into the vacant office of the Financial Secretary; with Comrade Polycarp Orosevwotu unanimously elected.
Two key Committees were inaugurated – Ethics and Disciplinary Committee and Bye-Law Drafting Committee which would be chaired by Comrades Francis Nwabiani and Akpokona Omafuaire respectfully.
