Gunmen suspected to be armed robbers, on Thursday night gunned down a mobile police officer attached to the Mobile Police detachment in Warri Area Command.

 

According to eyewitnesses living close to a petrol station in Etuwewe Street, Warri where the mobile policeman was killed; the armed men drove into the station and engaged the deceased in a conversation.

One of the eyewitnesses said that while the conversation was going on, the armed robbers shot the policeman at close range and carted away his service rifle.

 

When contacted on phone, Delta State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, confirmed the killing but did not give further detail.

The remains of the slain cop have been deposited in a mortuary by operatives of the command.

 

A senior security officer in Warri who spoke about the incident on condition of anonymity, said that with the disbandment of SARS; security of lives and properties have been compromised.

 

“The area has become porous since this protest started. Those guys helping us to patrol the place are the ones you people are saying should go.

 

“I really don’t know how we are going to cope. It’s so unfortunate,” the officer lamented.
